Andrew Shields Music Tuition

Through Year 11 and 12, I had Andrew as my guitar teacher to help me with school ensemble stuff and VCE Music. In just two years, Andrew had helped me grow so much in my musical development fluency.

First thing I should mention is Andrew knows his stuff. When I first started taking lessons with him, my music theory was very limited. Andrew was able to help me massively in being able to apply theoretical stuff to practical playing on the guitar. This was extremely helpful for my schools Jazz Ensembles and my VCE. I ended up getting a 47 study score in Contemporary Music and much of that result must be credited to Andrew’s hard work.

Not only is he a great teacher, but also a great mentor. To this day I am able to call him up and ask for advice on my musical journey and he has given me great and genuine advice on how to pursue a career in music. Often our lessons would go well overtime just so he could finish explaining a concept properly. It is extremely clear that Andrew loves to teach and truly cares about his students.

All in all, Andrew is an amazing guitar teacher who knows what he is doing, is very easy going and a great person all around. I was very lucky to have had him as a teacher.

Learning guitar in your 40s can be a daunting experience but Andrew has helped me more in the past year than I thought possible. He structures lessons in a way that actually makes sense and keeps it enjoyable with no judgments or comparison to where I “should” be. He’s an all round top guy and excellent teacher. Best decision I’ve made in a long time.

Andrew Shields has been an absolutely outstanding guitar teacher for my son. Over the past year, my sons progress has been remarkable. Under Andrew’s guidance, my son successfully completed AMEB Grade 2 and Grade 3 with very good scores within a very short time, and more importantly, has grown in confidence to the point where he is now playing in live bands.

What truly sets Andrew apart is his unconventional and highly effective teaching style. Instead of focusing solely on traditional sheet music and slow, rigid practice methods, he teaches in a way that keeps students engaged, motivated, and performance-ready. His approach helps kids actually play music and enjoy the process, rather than lose interest.

Andrew has a great ability to connect with students and bring out their potential quickly. I would highly recommend him to any parent, especially if your child is feeling stuck or disengaged with more traditional teaching styles. He makes learning guitar both fun and practical.

Definitely fits the bill of a personal professional tutor – listens to your priorities and your interests, explains all his methodology, caters to your strengths and weaknesses, has ALL the equipment – and is unfailingly polite and enthusiastic throughout. Nothing makes you want to quit guitar more than a bad teacher – and the opposite is true too. Nothing makes me want to keep playing and learning guitar than Andrew.
