Katie is a freelance modern and baroque viola and violin player in Melbourne with seven years of tertiary education – first at the University of Queensland (Bachelor of Music, Honours I) then at the Australian National Academy of Music (Professional Performance Program). She has had many years of teaching experience, from adult and child beginners to tertiary-level coaching. She is currently the viola teacher at Monash University, and previously has been Guest Head of Viola at the University of Queensland.
Her teaching encourages the understanding and enjoyment of music through a holistic method, incorporating a sound technical basis with aural and theory skills. Above all, she believes music is an extremely important way to communicate, learn, and have fun. She is dedicated to finding the best method for the student and is flexible with style, from rigorous classical training to improvisation to using other aspects of music (singing, clapping, movement and speech). As a baroque musician, a particular interest of hers is teaching the baroque violin and viola.
