Emma Cutting - Piano Teacher and Accompanist

Music Teacher and Accompanist

I love teaching, I love accompanying, and I love playing the piano - in short, I love what I do for a job!

I take great pride in my teaching work and I aim to do three BIG things-empower my students to be able to be independent with their thinking and learning, develop their love of music so that they can take it down whatever path they choose in life, and through music help students to become the best version of themselves musically and personally.

I have taught for many many years and, though I am always still learning, I have learnt a few things along the way! In my experience some of these include the following:

  • A student's music education needs to be tailored to the individual student's needs-no one else's!!!
  • As well as educating the student, it is vital to communicate with, support, and help parents where ever possible as they are the ones with their children in all those many hours away from the lesson!
  • It is super important to explain WHY the student needs to do things, especially if these things are not automatically loved e.g. scales.
  • As a teacher much time must be taken to teach the student HOW to practice, not just what to fix.
  • Having fun in my lessons is imperative! I love to laugh and love to share a corny joke however I do think that high standards and expectations need to be in place for each lesson-just like those I set of myself.
  • Setting all sorts of goals is key to improvement!

My accompanying of course follows all of the above. Also, I aim to do more than just the playing of the notes in the piano part- I work closely with the student on their ensemble playing and musicianship. For AMEB exams and any auditions requiring more than just playing (eg interviews, aural etc), I do my utmost to help parents and students (while working closely with their teachers of course) to bring every aspect of the exam or audition together so that the student can have the opportunity to perform their best in every facet of the exam on the day! Of course the earlier I am contacted for this type of service the better!!! I accompany Melbourne Uni recitals, Monash Recitals, VCE exams, music scholarship auditions, and lots of AMEB!

As for my playing, I make sure I am constantly learning pieces at all levels and styles to keep my awareness up, my fingers going, and my ability improving! I play with MSO constantly throughout the year and love to perform with my amazing colleagues when ever I can. All this playing certainly makes me a better teacher I feel!

My rates for my time in all areas of music education are as follows: 60 mins $87-  45 mins $67-  30 mins $47

My life apart from piano and music (and more music!) involves many things including gardening (I am growing lots of organic veggies at the moment!), cooking (lots of Thai and Moroccan food!), our two beautiful kitties Mister Fung and Meowstro, lots of Pilates, and my wonderful husband from whom I learn about Human Centred Design and many other awesome things.

You are more than welcome to contact me if you have any questions and I will do my very best to reply to your enquiry within a week. Probably an email or a text would be best as I work all hours. I often can't do last minute gigs (ie within the week) as my schedule fills up pretty quickly. But if you plan ahead I will do my utmost to help you!

Thank you so much for reading this! Emma
