Markus Matheis was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and commenced his singing career at the early age of ten, when he had his first soloist performances at the Frankfurt Opera House. They were followed by further engagements as a boy soprano, such as in Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" in the Alte Oper Frankfurt. Under the guidance of Carol Bruetting, the baritone later continued his vocal education – complemented by artistic impulses from various sides.
Markus' recent theater work stretches from the classical to modern theater productions – including Mozart's "Don Giovanni", Menotti's "The Consul" or the scenic realization of Ligeti's "Aventure" in an assortment of directorial perspectives by Philipp Harnoncourt or Bojana Cvejic, as well as a series of world premieres, including collaborations with the swiss Ensemble Phoenix and the ensemble für neue musik zürich. Markus can also be frequently heard in the oratorios of the Baroque and Romantic eras as well as in contemporary church music.
Seeing it as an always enlightening challenge, Markus regularly commits himself to the Lied, where under the direction of Irwin Gage and Dalton Baldwin he has been able to deepen his studies of this intimate art form. Markus is as prize winner and finalist of international competitions and has engaged in extensive concert activities with his piano partners Simon Bucher, Hedayet Djeddikar, Andreas Frese and Markus Gotthardt where this dedication and artistic dialogue finds repeatedly successful expression and recognition.
