About
Margaret Kong has currently been teaching piano for over 6 years, and theory for over 2 years, having experience with students of all ages and levels, from beginner to advanced. She is familiar with preparing students for their AMEB practical and theory exams as well as VCE performance exams, and will cater to each individual student’s needs. She is a graduate of Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School where she achieved a study score of 50 for her Music Investigation, and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music where she studied with Glenn Riddle and completed her Bachelor of Music degree in 2016.
At age 13, Margaret completed her LMUSA. Her numerous awards include the Zelman Symphony Orchestra Concerto Prize, the Dorothy Glover Award for Outstanding Young Pianists, the Hephzibah Menuhin Memorial Award, and the 3MBS Young Performer of the Year Award – a competition where she was also awarded the Audience Prize. Margaret has also won major prizes in International competitions in Indonesia and Thailand. She has performed concertos by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff with the Preston Symphony, Zelman Symphony Orchestra and Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. She has been broadcast live on 3MBS numerous times, including the Beethoven Marathon in 2013. In 2012 Margaret made her recital debut, performing Carl Vine’s Sonata No 1 (1990) and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata No. 2 (1931) as part of the Australian Catholic University’s Lunchtime Concert Series. She performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No 2 with the Zelman Symphony before a capacity audience at Deakin Edge Auditorium in a concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of Federation Square. Margaret has performed in master classes for renowned pianists such as Lang Lang, Paul Badura-Scoda, Paavali Jumppanen and Tamás Ungár.
