Mary-Ann has been teaching piano in her private music studio for more than 20 years. Mary-Ann started playing the piano at age 7 with her mother, also a piano teacher. Mary-Ann completed studies – BA Hons (Mus) and Grad Dip Hum (Mus) at La Trobe University and a Grad Dip Ed (Primary) at Monash University. Mary-Ann also studied piano with Klara Ambrus for several years.
While living on the Mexico/US border for almost a decade, Mary-Ann worked as a performing/teaching artist with Alejandro Espino Aldana, co-founder of ensemble ‘Arbol Azul.’ Together, they toured ‘Canto a La Luna:A Musical Journey through Latin America,’ an arts-in-education program, across the USA under the auspices of Young Audiences of San Diego and the Bureau of Lectures and Performing Artists. Arbol Azul was also artist-in-residence at Centro Cultural Tijuana, Mexico.
Mary-Ann is passionate about teaching children on the autism spectrum and is experienced in teaching verbal and non-verbal children (see www.spectrumpiano.com.au). Mary-Ann is currently undertaking her Masters in Autism Studies at Griffith University and she is a member of the Victorian Music Teachers Association, Amaze (Autism Victoria Inc) and Aspergers Victoria.
Mary-Ann enjoys playing minimalist composers such as Glass, Tiersen and Satie. She also has an affinity for the beautifully dissonant music of folk inspired composers such as Bartok, Khatchaturian, Villa Lobos and Piazzolla. When she finds time sitting on the window sill, she pursues creative projects in writing and photography.
Piano lessons with Mary-Ann are open to students of all ages, from young children to adults, beginners to intermediate. Mary-Ann provides a nurturing and supportive environment for your child to develop their natural musical potential or for you to realise your dream of playing the piano.
