Music Teacher
Piano, Violin

I hold a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance, with secondary piano, from the Eastman School of Music in NY, as well as both LTCL and LRSM diplomas in violin. I have had many years of orchestral experience as well, playing in the music conservatory as well as in professional orchestras like the Singapore Lyric Opera. I have 6 years’ experience in teaching music both privately and in music schools to a range of ages from as young as 3 years to over 60 years in age. Teaching methods: Nobody is too old or too young to learn music! As long as one has the interest and passion, they will be able to succeed in making beautiful music. I have taught a variety of ages starting from 3 and up. First of all, I aim to get my students to be able to read music independently. While this may seem slow at first, the long-term benefits are tremendous and motivating. I find that generally students who can read music by themselves improve faster than those who cannot, and playing music is a lot more enjoyable and relaxing for them. It is just like learning a language – the ability to read is just as important as the ability to speak it. I use a variety of method books, ranging from standard classical pieces to pop music, tailored according to each student’s personality type and learning pace. Some method books I use include the Oxford Fiddle Time Series, Eta Cohen’s Violin Method Books and Suzuki. Taking exams are recommended although not enforced in my studio. Exams help in that they present a goal for students to strive towards. However, first and foremost, I believe it is important for students to enjoy playing the violin. If students wish to pursue exams, I can prepare students for either AMEB or ABRSM exams. Basic music theory is integrated into violin lessons; however, I also do offer pure theory lessons (no instrument). I prefer to teach at my house, however this is negotiable. Trial lessons are $20 for half hour. Students who continue on receive the first 4 lessons at 20% off. Thereafter, regular rates at $70/h apply.
