Hi folks! My name's Michael McNab. I'm a professional drummer and percussionist working regularly around Melbourne (and sometimes interstate/overseas). I graduated from the VCA in 2012 with a Bachelor degree in Music Performance (Improvisation). In my time there I was awarded a scholarship for academic excellence, played drums in the winning bands of the ensemble competition two years in a row, and most importantly, met the majority of my friends whom I now call colleagues in the music scene :)
After graduating, I undertook a government-funded trip to Europe to study with two of my drumming heroes - Will Guthrie and Tony Buck, over a 3-month period.
Nowadays, as well as teaching, I regularly play gigs of various styles, in ongoing bands as well as one-off projects (rock, jazz, funk/hip hop, experimental, etc), I make and perform my own electronic music, and also collaborate with professional dancers and choreographers.
I have been teaching drums professionally since 2010, at a number of schools (Upwey South, Oakleigh, Riddells Creek), as well as privately. I have taught all ages from 5 to 50+, helped students prepare for exams and public performances, directed student band rehearsals, and transcribed drum parts from students' favourite songs for their learning/enjoyment.
I have also been playing the electric bass for the last 2 years. I tend to accompany students on the bass in their lessons to get them playing in an authentic musical context from day one - playing music is after all the best practice!
As a teacher, I try to bring as well-rounded an approach as I can to lessons. This means, I aim to teach students how to find the proper technique for their own body on the instrument to achieve the best sound they can, how to read music, how to LISTEN and use their ears to decipher beats/rhythms/sounds from their favourite songs and apply them to the instrument, how to improvise, how to write their own beats and songs, as well as generally build their vocabulary to be ready for any musical situation on the drums. All this I try to do in as direct and enjoyable a way as possible. Even absolute beginners can expect to walk away from the first lesson with a small piece of music they can play at home!
Although I am a drum kit specialist, for those students who wish to study hand drumming or other forms of percussion, I have studied some of these instruments also and am happy to oblige.
And, for more experienced drummers out there who would like to check out something more specific and take their playing to the next level - reading rhythm/charts, applying rudiments to the drum kit, four-way co-ordination, speed and dynamic control, polyrhythms and odd-time, etc etc - I am capable of helping with all these things too!
Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like a trial lesson - first lesson is free of charge.
