Sonya Lopes began playing trombone at the age of 9. She studied music at the Conservatorium of Music Sydney completing a Bachelor of Music in Performance (2000). Music has taken Sonya many places. She won a scholarship in 1997 to the mountains of Brazil where she played with the orchestra for the Annual Winter Music Festival. She traveled with SBS Youth Orchestra to Russia, Finland and Estonia, and she performed for 7 years with the Royal Australian Navy Band (Sydney) from where they traveled extensively around Australia as well as overseas. (Gollipoli, Brunei, Solomon Islands, Norfolk Island, to name a few.) Sonya also enjoys writing music and has had experience recording both her own music and on others' recordings. As a freelance musician and teacher in the Northern Rivers region, Sonya has enjoyed playing with big-bands and rock-bands,as well as with the Lismore Symphony Orchestra. She has Trombone and Trumpet students and loves people of all ages.
