Piano, Viola, Violin Music Teacher and Accompanist

About

Are you searching for a teacher who understands what it’ s like to start learning an instrument as an adult? Would you like to introduce the joy of music to your child?
I have been teaching for over 20 years and believe that encouragement and discipline ensure success. I currently perform with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; in a tango band; and, in various chamber music ensembles. I attribute my success to my commitment to excel on my instrument, paired with the consistent guidance from my instrumental teachers. The importance the student / teacher relationship is paramount.

I have prepared students for VCE music exams; VCA Secondary School auditions; youth orchestra auditions, as well as AMEB exams. Above all, my interest is to encourage students to play the music they love. Last year, my student string quartet played repertoire they chose by Michael Jackson/ ACDC/ Coldplay and Irish gigs as a lesson in ensemble, rhythm and leading. This was in addition to their AMEB exams where they could be guided to see the importance of playing scales, and music by composers such as Mozart and Bach. Lets discuss your musical aspirations...

Reviews: I chose Sophie as a teacher years ago not only because of her extensive performance history, but also because she has solid music qualifications. Sophie’s tailors her pragmatic, informed teaching approach – which combines concrete technical facility development with musical expression – for my level, and has resulted in consistent improvement, much faster than I would have expected. I believe that this skill development provides the basis for creating free musical expression, as well as solid technical foundation for progressing future string technique. Her knowledge of differing musical styles is vast, and she is always happy to help you with music that you would like to learn. In addition, every piece of advice and support she has given – without exception — regarding choosing instruments, bows, strings etc has been rock solid. To be honest, in the beginning, I would not personally have done what she suggested, but I have followed all of her advice and she has always been correct – that is why we have teachers! In my experience, good musicians are not necessarily good teachers, but Sophie is both, and I totally trust all her teaching and am immensely grateful to have her as my teacher. Sophie is a highly motivated and enthusiastic teacher, who is passionate about music and playing stringed instruments. Her measured delivery to students is always precise and detailed, as she impresses the importance on correct handling and playing techniques.
We are very grateful to Sophie for her continued patience and inspiring guidance with our 11 year old boy, who is making significant progress on his violin as a result.

I have been taking violin lessons with Sophie for over a year. She is a very friendly person and is always enthusiastic about her teaching. She prepared me thoroughly for my recent exam. I really enjoy the opportunities she provides me with, to play other pieces in chamber ensembles and in mini concerts.

Sophie holds a high regard for the enjoyment of music. She is an experienced, dedicated and professional musician who teaches in the Prahran area.
