Declan Postlethwaite is a versatile music educator, cellist, pianist, and composer based in Ballarat. He holds an Honours degree in Music (Composition) from the University of Melbourne and brings over 10 years of experience teaching in private studios, as well as in leading school music programs.
Declan teaches cello, piano, and composition to students from beginner to advanced level, working with ages 5 and above. His lessons are tailored to individual goals, whether for personal enjoyment, AMEB examinations, or audition preparation.
Alongside teaching, Declan is an active performer and composer. His composition work spans solo, chamber, and ensemble settings, reflecting a strong grounding in classical traditions while engaging with contemporary ideas. As a performer, he has extensive experience in orchestras, chamber groups, and musical theatre.
An active performer, Declan has played in orchestras, chamber ensembles, and musical theatre productions, including serving as principal cellist for the Ballarat Symphony Orchestra and performing in productions such as Les Misérables (2020), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2023), Annie (2024), The Wizard of Oz (2025), and Frozen (2026).
His teaching approach draws on Suzuki and Alexander Technique principles, with a focus on strong foundational skills, efficient practice habits, and a holistic approach to musicianship.
