About

Michael is a former member of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and has played with most of the Australian symphony orchestras, as well as orchestras and specialist early music ensembles in Germany and Austria. He is a founding member of Brisbane’s ensemble for Baroque music on original instruments, the Badinerie Players, an examiner for the A.M.E.B., and an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Queensland School of Music. Michael’s first instrument was the cello, which he started with Cordula Distler, continuing with Cedric Ashton and Osric Fyfe at Sydney Conservatorium. He also studied in Vienna and Salzburg: viola da gamba with José Vazquez and Wieland Kuijken, double bass with Hannes Auersperg, and performance practice with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. While in Europe he performed and recorded in many countries. As an auditioner and tutor for QYO and a former symphony orchestra player, Michael has a very good understanding of orchestral style and audition preparation at all levels up to professional. He teaches children and adults in his studio in Paddington, Brisbane, preparing students for exams and assessments, or alternatively just for fun and personal development. He is also available for online lessons.
