About

Firebird School of Music is a boutique music school based in Thornbury, offering specialised music lessons across a range of instrument disciplines for all ages.

Borne out of a passion for community-minded music-making, Firebird offers an integrated music learning experience.

All lessons are taught to the highest standard by professional music teachers, with each lesson individually tailored to each student’s learning goals and needs.

Beyond one-on-one music lessons with music teachers all trained at various prestigious university music schools across Melbourne, Firebird offers the opportunity for students to put their music learning in to practise through our in-house student bands, workshops and ensembles. This provides students with the unique opportunity to make friends, network and most of all, learn how to make music with other people.

Jonno ‘Archie’ Rumsam has formally studied guitar since 2005, and voice since 2008.

His love for music began as a kid in the 90’s with a love for Brit Rock, cultivating a decent Liam Gallagher impression (yes, he can play Wonderwall and yes, he will teach you if you like). He had his metal phase in the 00’s, before fully discovering what he affectionately calls ‘The Weird Stuff’ in the 2010’s. He was inspired to develop a singing voice with the vocal styles of Serj Tankian, of System of a Down fame, Damon Albarn from Blur, and David Bowie.

Archie began learning classical guitar with an interest in the Spanish style, with a soft spot for Villa-Lobos. Quickly, though, he fell in love with 20th Century impressionist styles and tone poetry, especially the late Australian composer Phillip Houghton. His vocal study began with being the weakest in the school musical, and studied hard until he found himself singing a role with Preston-based BK Opera, with whom he still performs today.

Archie loves teaching about as much as he loves watching people learn, and he’s always excited to meet new students and start a journey with them.
