I’m Gulliver, a pianist-composer based in Collingwood. My own training background is as a concert pianist, I’m a graduate with honours from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, and also work as a freelance composer. After receiving the Duo Eclettico Young Composer Award in 2020 I have had multiple commissions performed across venues in Melbourne, including fortyfivedownstairs, Tempo Rubato, Hanson Dyer Hall, and the Melbourne Recital Centre.
I have taught a wide range of students, in both age and ability, across multiple private music studios, and am currently focused on further building my own independent teaching practice. My teaching philosophy centres around adapting to a student’s needs, whether they thrive under the pressure of difficult repertoire, or a slower approach focused on finding music that they are genuinely interested in playing. I aim to inspire a love of music in my students, to nourish their own creative interests and usher them towards an expanded appreciation of where music comes from, and why it makes us feel the things that we do. In my approach I focus on teaching a strong technical, theoretical, and historical foundation, as a means towards expressive liberty, not as an end in itself.
