PIANO – fun, educational lessons based on the most effective music learning methods. I have 30 years of teaching experience and have coached students for hobby or exams (HSC, AMEB, Trinity College London, ABRSM). I’ve taught piano, theory and aural in primary and high schools, and university piano students.

Schools where I have taught piano and group theory include: Central Coast Conservatorium, The King’s School (5 years), St Aloysius’ College (4 years), North Sydney Public School (9 years), and Abbotsford Public School.

An expert teacher, from age 9 to 24, I was piano student of Sydney Conservatorium concert pianists, including Elizabeth Powell, Head of Piano, and renowned pianist Lyall Duke. I attended more than 100 piano pedagogy and teaching repertoire courses from age 18 to 35, from international and Australian pedagogues. This allows me to teach highly specialised ergonomic techniques which allow you to play for hours with ease, and I identify incorrect wrist and finger movements and train you in how to alleviate tension, tiredness and harsh thumping. Premium skills coaching in how to truly make the piano ‘sing’.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW – Piano

1. PIANO OR KEYBOARD? Students always learn faster on a traditional, upright piano which produces a beautiful singing tone (from wood, strings and felt hammers), and has the tactile pleasure of the key movement. Electric keyboards are okay to learn on for beginners and intermediate. Advanced best on upright and grand pianos.

2. When can I start piano?

ADULTS – the oldest beginner I have taught was 74. You can start piano at any age and with a bit of determination, are likely to untap musical potential in this artistic pursuit. Unwind after work and on the weekend with piano.

YOUNG CHILDREN – best start piano foundation at 4, 5 or 6 years of age, if ready to learn, to establish a practice routine before busier years in primary school.

OLDER CHILDREN – primary school and high school: once you get a few pieces you love under your belt, spur yourself on to build piano skills and a playing list. Schedule in 4 to 6 practices a week to make good progress. Some get away with 3 practices.

For all, if you can stick at the piano for about 4 years, the reward is a life skill of playing piano.
