Pianist and piano teacher with 10 years’ experience in education. Currently studying a master’s degree in music education at the University of Melbourne.
I offer piano lessons and accompaniment out of my home studio in Northcote. My lessons encompass technique, theory, sight reading, practice skills, exam/recital preparation, aural training, and composition. I tailor my lessons to my students’ interests and needs. Adults and children of any skill level welcome!
I teach a range of repertory, drawing from method books, exam syllabuses, popular songs, and standard classical repertory. If you have a song or piece you would like to learn, I’ll teach it to you! Don’t worry about how hard it is; I can make an arrangement that best suits your current skill level.
Learning technique is not as simple as just playing scales – it’s about freedom and efficiency of movement. I draw on my experience as a student of the Taubman approach to piano technique and the Alexander technique to teach from a whole-body perspective. If something isn’t sounding right, I will examine the way you are moving and help you to understand what exactly you need to change and how to practice to make it happen.
I teach theory progressively as it applies to the repertory that we study, meaning you won’t be left learning abstract concepts without understanding how they relate to real music. That might mean learning chords by playing along to songs you like, learning scales by improvising melodies, or learning analysis to memorise parts of your piece. I also offer pure music theory lessons for those preparing for theory exams or who are just interested.
Incorporating piano practice into your life won’t just make you a better musician, it teaches you soft skills that transfer to every facet of your life. Learning to practice well means learning mindfulness, attentional control, self-regulation, proprioception, active listening, and learning to love and appreciate music and art as a whole. I want to help you to develop these skills as you learn and grow as a musician.
Please give me a call/text/email and we can discuss what you or your child are looking to get out of music lessons and how I can help you.
