About

Charles Bluett is a Brisbane/Meanjin-based pianist, working as a teacher, accompanist and performer. Growing up in a musical household and as part of a family of piano teachers Charles was exposed to music from a very young age, commencing musical lessons at the age of 6. Charles studied piano throughout his schooling completing AMEB and TCL examinations. Pursuing piano further, Charles began his tertiary studies at The University of Queensland in 2018, studying piano with Max Olding AM and Angela Turner, and completing his Honours in 2023. During this time Charles won the Burnett William Wendorff Memorial Prize, and performed in solo, chamber and orchestral contexts. Throughout his performance career Charles has performed in venues such as QPAC, the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre, King George Square, St John’s Cathedral, the Queensland Children’s Hospital, and participated in such festivals as the Brisbane Music Festival, and as part of the Recovered Futures art exhibition. Since 2019 Charles has worked regularly as a teacher, accompanist and performer. Charles taught piano at both Mansfield State School and Cannon Hill State School, and works as an accompanist for local school eisteddfods and AMEB examinations. In 2024 Charles recorded an album of piano duets by Australian composer Graeme Denniss with fellow pianist Grace Paek. More recently, he has pursued his interest in musical arrangement/publishing currently working on an album of duets.

My aim in my teaching is to help students learn the skills required to play the music they want to play. I believe not only that every student deserves to learn, but that every student can learn (it’s never too late, and music is for everyone). I understand that every student is different and requires a specifc approach, and I try to tailor my lessons and teaching style to cater to each student’s individual needs and goals. Helping me achieve this goal, is my belief that if you haven’t understood a concept yet, then I simply haven’t taught you the right way yet. I am comfortable teaching students of all ages and levels, and have experience teaching both AMEB and TCL examinations, and preparing students for tertiary study auditions. In addition to this, whilst I am most expert in the classical medium, I am more than happy teaching contemporary and pop genres, frequently teaching and arranging themes from Movies, TV Shows and Video Games for my students.
